The 64th ACC Scientific Sessions in San Diego was the stage for our first group of Fellows in Training (FITs) participating of our Mentored Travel Award. On the premise that early FIT engagement with the College is important, our Chapter decided to financially support 3 senior fellows (from left to right Dr. Reynerio Perez, Dr. Nelson Espinell, and Dr. Juan Garcia) to travel to the meeting with an assigned attending level mentor of their choice. Dr. Juan C. Sotomonte, President Elect, and myself served as mentors.
Day 1 before the start of the meeting provided a unique opportunity as the FITs joined us at the reception following the BOG Meeting. As we engaged in the plans for the next 3 days, they met former, current, and future chairs of the BOG including Drs. Robert Shor, Michael Mansour, Mathew Phillips, and Dipti Itchhaporia, as well as ACC Vice-President Dr. Richard Chazal. On day 2 we had the opportunity to meet at sessions from core curricula to live cases. Day 3 followed similarly but highlighted by attending the ACC PAC FIT reception, where they could do additional networking with ACC Leadership, and the traditional ACCPR/SPC Noche Puertorriqueña at ACC, before wrapping it up with several sessions and a group photo on day 4.
Immediate feedback fro the FIT was unanimous in the high value of the experience. We therefore hope to preserve and enhance this opportunity in years to come.
